In the ChicagoInno article “Eric Lefkofsky’s Self-Funded Mission to Cure Cancer Through Data”, Jim Dalke discusses the serial entrepreneur’s dedication to his new company. Mr. Lefkofsky began Tempus with his business partner, Brad Keywell, after his wife was diagnosed with cancer.
He was shocked at the lack of information and the overwhelming confusion when dealing with such a diagnosis. His company was created to try and solve an overwhelming issue within healthcare. As he discovered with his wife’s diagnosis, despite meeting with doctor’s and specialists, cancer patients are often left with a lack of data and information to inform their decisions for treatment. Tempus is his attempt to create a paradigm shift in the healthcare industry, shifting it to a data-based approach to cancer treatment. The company uses genomic sequencing and the development of machine learning in order to have a more detailed analysis of a patient’s tumor.
Mr. Lefkofsky believes that the company has the potential to be one of the most imperative shifts in healthcare because it allows doctors to look within the body and have a better understanding of the person at a molecular level. This data would allow a more personalized more precise treatment plan.
Though the company is a startup, he is willing to fund it himself which provides an advantage over the competition. It has developed partnerships with a variety of healthcare institutions such as the Mayo Clinic, the University of Michigan, Northwestern University, and the University of Chicago. It has built a library of molecular clinical information and an operating system that interprets the information for doctors. The data provides the information for physicians to interpret previous patients who had similar biological profiles in order to find treatments that are more likely to be successful.
Eric Lefkofsky graduated from the University of Michigan with honors in 1991. In 1993, he received his Juris Doctorate from University of Michigan Law School in 1993. However, he pursued a more entrepreneurial career path and is the founder of a variety of companies.
